Tricks for multiplication facts of 12
Eliminate the “easy”!
Write all the multiplication facts down.
Which ones do the students already know?
They definitely know 12 x 0 = 0.
They definitely know 12 x 1 = 12.
They definitely know 12 x 2 = 24, 12 x 5 = 60, 12 x 10 = 120.
That means they already know five of the facts!
This means that there are only eight more facts that they need to know! (12 x 3, 12 x 4, 12 x 6, 12 x 7, 12 x 8, 12 x 9, 12 x 11, 12 x 12).
It sounds silly, but reminding students about the handful they already know will increase student confidence and make the 12 facts seem like less of an uphill battle!
See the pattern!
Writing all the multiplication facts of 12 down will instantly show kids a pattern.
What do you see in the above picture?
The tens place value goes up by 1 with each fact, while the ones place value goes up by 2 with each fact!
Have students write out the column of facts once a day (it will take about 5 minutes. Find an awkward amount of time during the day to do this!).
The pattern will start sticking in your students‘ brains, they’ll be surprised how much they retain it.

Flashcards
UGH I KNOW.
No one wants to hear this… but flashcards and memorization are truly the best way to get those facts permanently stuck in our students’ heads.
But flashcards are BORING.
So…. this means that we need to spruce up flashcards!
There’s a couple ways to do this.
First, give students ownership and have them create their own (plus this saves on money for you )
Pass out index cards, and have students create their own set as a math center and store them in a Ziploc bag.
Start using these flashcards for EVERYTHING.
Finish a math worksheet early? Grab a set of flashcards and start practicing.
Instead of morning work, have students find a partner and quiz one another.
The more that students practice, the more that those math facts are going to start “sticking“!
