Me and My Place in Space by Joan Sweeney takes us from our bedroom to space where we explore the moon, the sun, and each of the eight planets.  This is a great one to read aloud as an introduction to a unit.

Hey Ho, to Mars We’ll Go! by Susan Lendroth blasts on to the Red Planet.  Join the astronauts and learn alongside them in this out of the world adventure. The song is sung to “The Farmer in the Dell.”

What does it look like below from space?  Find out in ABCs from Space by Adam Voiland. Can you spot each letter of the alphabet from space?  You bet you can!

Looking for a book that the kids can explore together?  Check out You Choose in Space by Nick Sharrat.  My kids adored this series.  The “reader” gets to make all the decisions and a natural oral story develops from there.  It’s kind of like a choose your own adventure book meets picture book.

For another interactive book, check out the Shine-a-Light Book On The Space Station by Carron Brown. You can shine a flashlight through the pages or hold the book up to the light to reveal hidden objects.

Letters From Space by Clayton Anderson is told through a series of letters from an astronaut to those on Earth. Letters include a question about the length of time to wear a pair of underwear in space directed to mission control to a letter to a teacher about growing plants in space.  You can pick and choose the letters to read to make this a shorter read for young preschoolers.

The universe is vast and Jason Chin helps us put that vastness into perspective starting with the size of an average 8-year-old and building from there in Your Place in the Universe. Lots of information about space is shared as the book grows and grows.  Again, you can choose to just read the main text for a shorter preschool read.

Books About Astronauts

I Want to Be an Astronaut by Byron Barton has nice bold images making this a good cirlce time pick.  What would it be like to an astronaut?  Well, it would be pretty cool.

Brian Biggs brings us The Space Walk where Randolph is ready for a space walk but he needs to listen and follow directions from mission control who sounds a lot like your parents.  This is a fun and silly read aloud.  You can even listen to Biggs read the story aloud in the video below.

Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed is the story of the first African American woman to travel in space, Mae Jemison. It’s a beautiful story about believing in your dreams.

The Astronaut With a Song for the Stars: The Story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa by Julia Finley Mosca is a rhyming tale that introduces us to another amazing woman astronaut who broke barriers.

Learn all about becoming an astronaut in Astronaut Handbook by Meghan McCarthy.
