The Reason

Song:  The Reason

Alex's mother emailed me on the latest news of Alex.

This was one of his recent lunches near UC Berkeley.

He is presently taking two graduate level math courses...
one independent study undergraduate math course...
and an Honors Thesis Math course
(He had completed all of his undergraduate core courses already).

Alex is working on his Honors Math Thesis...
as he is in the Honors program.

Once he completes and gets his Thesis accepted...
he will be able to graduate with Honors.

Alex is so fortunate in life in that he had found his life's passion early on.

He has relentlessly pursued it all of his life.

It is what he loves thinking about...
researching and learning more and more about...
and what he simply loves doing.

He had found...
The Reason.

The reason for Alex's great happiness in life is that he is chasing and living his passions...
plans to make it his life's work...
all the while being able to make a good living at it.

It is the best of all worlds.

It follows the old adage:

"Do what you love doing...
and you won't work a day in your life."

Our lives are very short.

Spend it hiding away from necessary displeasures...
which if instead faced with the discipline to overcome and do them anyway...
with the intelligence to learn to love them...
and you will live the life of a rabbit in his underground den.

Yes, a person may hunker down in life...
spending all his resources and time avoiding displeasures...
and then spending all of his life in chasing momentary distractions
to temporarily flavor his dull existence.

But that is not truly living.

That is living a life in search of freedom from anxiety.

That is merely existing.

That is hiding away from life for fear of it.

Soar the skies as an eagle...
with a constant view of distant horizons...
with the freedom of all the skies.

In order to do this...
one merely must spread his wings and fly.

Alex is presently soaring the skies as he exercises his wings...
scanning the land for life's opportunities while keeping his eyes
open for new opportunities on the distant horizon.

During his flight...
he soars among the clouds...
the metaphorical home of the gods.

His ultimate altitude is under his control and will.

After achieving his goals...
he may find a mountain peak of his choice to make his nest...
and it will be from there that he will be able to enjoy the glorious sunsets in life.

The reason to soar the skies is what each of us must find for ourselves.

It is the reason which gives so much color to life.

It is the reason that gives us our hunger for life...
and for our supreme enjoyment of all the simple pleasures within.

Once a person experiences the freedom of the open expanses of the skies...
with the warmth of the sun upon him...
with the fresh air flowing through his lungs...
with the ever changing cloud formations and the kaleidoscope of colors
 the sun plays upon them...
with the ever expanding horizons of new lands to explore...
he will never choose to be a rabbit safely ensconced in his den...
devoid of light and freedom and...
The Reason.

An eagle braves the buffeting storm winds because of...
 The Reason.

An eagle relentlessly exercises his wings in preparation for his first flight.
He knows that should he not prepare himself for his first leap off the cliff...
he will plummet to his death.

And so...
he takes his preparations seriously.

But it is not fear of death which drives him forth.

It is...
The Reason.

An eagle lives chasing...
 The Reason.

The eagle's parents prepared their eaglet for life by exposing him to
life among the clouds high in their mountain perch.

The had given him a taste of distant horizons...
glorious sunsets...
and a world open to his greatest desires.

To soar among the clouds...
to find the perfect mountain top where you may enjoy
life's sunsets with a loving mate...
to raise your own eaglets so they may find...
The Reason...
to view all of life flowing from this...
as being guided by it and constantly driving you forth from within...
to feel the colors of the sunsets...
to flow with the music of the buffeting winds...
to be a god in the clouds as you soar above them...

this is...
The Reason.
